Britt: I’ll tell you, we were on our way home from Montana, we were up there for the state shoot, a friend of mine and his wife, and we were going to stop and shoot the Spanish Fork. I said that’d be fun but I had to go home and shoot in Amarillo and go straight to the Grand. I told (my friend), they don’t throw targets very hard there. And he said, well everybody’s breaking them. And I said I know there’s people from Texas that send 20 cases of shells up there and they go up there and pump their averages up, but I said Mr. Orlich told me when I was 13 year’s old out at Harold’s Club, we were sitting there one morning having breakfast. And I said, what can I do to make myself better? He said, how old are you? I said 13. AA? And I said, yes sir. 27? Yes sir. And he said, do you keep a score card? And I said, yes sir. And he said, quit. An average won’t win you one trophy at the Grand. And he’s right.
Do you know how many of those guys that shoot averages that I’ve shot with through my life, I’ve never ever went to a shoot that I didn’t shoot the whole high overall program. There’s several times I’ve gone out to shoot and there’s going to be one or two of us there, and the rest of them are in there playing hearts because the winds blowing.
I’ll bet any of them any amount of money they want. They come out here, you shoot the whole winter chain, and shoot every single, every handicap target and then come back to in the panhandle and shoot February, March and April in Amarillo. I’ll kiss your foot if you can have those kind of averages. They don’t exist.
It’s really a false sense. You can look at what your averages were from the middle of June to the Grand, everybody had good averages. But if you go out there and you shoot several thousand targets in all kinds of weather, it won’t exist.
iTrapshooter.com: Great insight.
Britt: It’s the truth, there are so many of those guys, I’ve seen them pout, they get mad, quit, go home, go in and play hearts. If you don’t think it doesn’t happen now? So what does that average get them? An extra 75 cents? That average will buy you a cup of coffee before it’ll have your name in a record book.
That didn’t make any difference. Back then, why would I be 1500 miles from home in Reno, it’s snowing, you’re freezing your butt off and I’m not going to go shoot? Well I can’t call home and say I don’t feel like shooting today because it’s too cold and windy. I’ve got all my money tied up in the shoot and the only way I’m going to get home and pay bills is to shoot good.
